Dana Huyge is an accomplished violist, and has performed with virtually every professional orchestra in Upstate New York. He currently performs with the Grammy award winning Albany Symphony Orchestra and Symphoria. He is also the former Principal Violist of the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra.

A skilled chamber musician, Mr. Huyge enjoys performing with the Clinton String Quartet, and in a variety of other settings as well. In 2012, as a recent graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Mr. Huyge performed with the Sullivan Viola Quartet at the International Viola Congress to a standing ovation.

Mr. Huyge is a strong advocate for contemporary music. In 2009, he commissioned a viola sonata from Karl Henning, and later gave the world premiere. As part of his work with Gibbs & Main, he recorded an entire disc of world premieres. The Albany Symphony has many recording projects in production, including recent releases featuring the works of John Harbison and Michael Torke.

Mr. Huyge’s private studio has been open to students of all ages since 2010, and recently took over the Suzuki program at Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Fayetteville. He received his book one Suzuki certification at the 2011 Summer Suzuki School at Ithaca College. While teaching the Suzuki method to beginning string players has remained his primary teaching vehicle, he also uses elements of Dalcroze Eurhythmics and the Alexander Technique to promote a physically easy, stress free approach to the instrument for his older students. His students have had success at the community orchestra level, at NYSSMA
